You write your own destiny. That indeed is a very true sentiment, but question is, are you doing it the right way? Or perhaps you have no idea what the right or wrong way to do it is. Well, when you’re done reading this, maybe you might end up with the answer you need.
It all begins with a story, a story about a man molded out of clay and given the breath of life by the creator, God. I’m sure most of you know this story quite well, but if not, don’t hesitate to study Genesis chapter two.
God, the master craftsman, the epitome of creativity, the embodiment itself of innovation, the perfect planner, author of destinies and the pillar of artistry, yes the list can go on, because no matter how amazing and intricate these descriptions are, they still cannot satisfy the hunger to describe Him in an even bigger way.
What I will focus on though, is that which describes him as the author of destinies.
Now hold your horses, before jumping to conclusions. What I mean is that God being sovereign, created us for his glory (Isaiah 46:3). Why else would he create us in his likeness, if not to glorify him, here on earth, as he had created it? That was our initial destiny, in accordance to his will, but remember, God gifted us free will and the ability to make our own choices and decisions. A mistake we normally make, is to assume that destiny is a pre-determined course of events beyond human control, sort of likening it to resignation- if we can’t change destiny, then why even try? Whatever happens, happens, and we can do nothing to alter its course. This is called ‘’fatalism’’ and it is not at all biblical.
Jeremiah 1:5, ‘’Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations’’. Ask yourself, what if Jeremiah, who had his free will, and was part of an esteemed and wealthy family, said no to what God had predestined for him? He had a choice, right? But this Great Prophet of God, knew something most of us do not. He knew, that God being the author of life, was full of wisdom that us men (humans) could not fathom or match. Jeremiah 9:23-24, 23 ‘’let not the wise boast of their wisdom, or the strong of their strength, or the rich of their fleeting riches, 24 but let the one who boasts, boast that they have the understanding to know me…’’
God planned out each and every single day of our lives, in accordance to his will, to perfection, and yes, he is a perfectionist. But one thing that he did was to lay down the pen and script, after he was done and he allowed us the chance to make changes to the parts where His story did not seem too exciting, breathtaking or creative enough for us. With white out, we cover up his masterpiece and write our own ‘’masterpieces’’ over his. We get to see this in the fall of man. The fall of man was not a predestined event in which Adam and Eve were hapless victims of a ‘’puppet master’’ God. On the contrary, this was Adam and Eve, through free will rewriting God’s story concerning their lives, after encountering the serpent’s divisiveness that brought along thoughts of an exciting new life for them (knowledge). They had the ability or even capability to choose obedience and trusting God’s story for their lives, or to choose disobedience and the curse that came along with it. They knew what the result of their decision would be, and God held them accountable (Genesis 3). Proverbs 22:8, ‘’He who sows wickedness reaps trouble’’
Wasn’t Adam and Eve’s destinies in their own hands? The same goes for all of us.
Will you proofread God’s story for your life and tweak it where need be, or will you tell him that it is a masterpiece and thank him for writing a story so enticing, intricate and devoid of error?
As you can see, it is in our own hands that our destinies lie and it all comes down to our choices. Will you create it yourself, or let go and let God?
Jeremiah 29:11, ‘’For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’’
